The community is sensitive to poor morale, lack of discipline and fairness, but might lack the skills to actually score the needed points. You must, however, learn the weaknesses of both and find a way to balance them well. It takes a healthy supply of both components to make the total package we call ministry team. The former is responsible for the output of the team for which the team exists and is deemed relevant to the rest of the church and the latter is there so that the team can continue to exist and to thrive. I often get to tell them that the team has two major aspects, the production and the community. I have had the opportunity to speak to a number of church based service teams and leaders of such teams. Essentially, they provide the environment for those sticks that are long enough to do the actual sweeping. They are just there, filling up the broom and giving the firmness and weight that users appreciate. So, in an effective and preferred broom, there are a significant number of broom sticks that are so short that they never touch the surfaces being swept. Most people who use these brooms usually get excited when a new one is purchased but prefer to work with an old broom. If you have ever held the type of brooms of which I speak, you will realise that they usually feel very flimsy when brand new but with time, they get shorter in length but firmer in the hand. Hence the proverb, “New brooms sweep clean but old brooms know the corners”… I heard that in secondary school.

Typically, a brand new broom would boast a full head of broom sticks with just about the same length all round.
What I noticed is that the broom sticks were of varying lengths. I’m not referring to the “United we stand, divided we fall” lesson, I expect we all had that class many times before. I have been seeing it all my life but it never spoke to me the lessons it did on this occasion. I recently held one in my hand and in the process of use, I realised something. I’m Nigerian so it wouldn’t come as a surprise that I have access to one of the several varieties of the African broom. But for now we still need to and for all our sophistication, we still cannot do without brooms.īrooms are in different shapes and sizes and even made from a variety of materials … some synthetic, some natural. There are so many types of cleaning devices nowadays, there is a constant advancement towards the point where people do not need to get out of bed to clean up the house.
